AI in physiotherapy: what are the benefits?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently making great strides in healthcare, including physiotherapy. But what can you expect from this revolution, and what benefits will it bring to physiotherapy practices? Tim Gast is the founder of Physio AI, an innovative application focused on the use of AI applications within physiotherapy. Recently, the Health Cloud Initiative (HCI) – with its sub-labels SpotOnMedics and FysioRoadmap – entered into a partnership with Fysio AI. In the interview below, he discusses the impact and benefits of AI in physiotherapy.

What possibilities does Fysio AI offer for physiotherapy?

At Fysio AI, we strongly believe in a future where every physiotherapist has a digital assistant. This assistant not only supports automatic recording of appointments but also, in the long term, contributes to treatment plans and follow-up actions. The physiotherapist remains in the cockpit, but is joined by an administrative colleague who handles the peripheral tasks. Fysio AI automatically records according to applicable guidelines and established structures, such as the SOEP method. This results in consistent reporting, which in turn facilitates accountability with insurers and quality monitoring within the practice. We're just getting started. Besides reporting, we see short-term opportunities in supporting treatment plans, smart risk alerts, and remote patient monitoring. But the goal is and remains: strengthening physiotherapy, not replacing it.

What role does data analysis play in better patient care?

Good data analysis starts with complete and structured data. Physio AI helps therapists systematically record consultations according to fixed categories. Starting a recording automatically creates a draft report. Then, all you have to do is review and process this report. This immediately saves time, especially on busy days or with complex cases. And therapists can focus fully on the patient during the consultation.
“The goal is and remains: to strengthen physiotherapy, not replace it.”

Recently, Fysio AI entered into a partnership with HCI and its physiotherapy labels SpotOnMedics and FysioRoadmapWhat possibilities do you see here?

We partnered with HCI because we share a common mission: supporting physiotherapists with smart, accessible technology. By joining forces, we create a comprehensive solution that works within existing workflows, without additional steps or separate accounts. The collaboration with HCI is essential for practice management software and AI to work efficiently together. Because Fysio AI is fully integrated within the EHR, therapists don't have to switch between systems. This saves time, prevents errors, and ensures a seamless work experience.

Is the use of AI in physiotherapy safe?

Fysio AI is designed with security as a foundation. We don't store anything ourselves, and all our servers are located within Europe. Fysio AI also complies with GDPR guidelines and is NEN7510 and ISO27001 certified. We explain everything transparently in our documentation center.
“Therapists can focus their full attention on the patient during the consultation.”
While we don't use this data ourselves, it can be valuable for organizations like the National Physiotherapy Database (LDF). In this way, we contribute to better, data-driven physiotherapy care.

How does this relate to data exchange?

“The integration between Physio AI and HCI (SpotOnMedics/FysioRoadmap) ensures that only strictly necessary data is exchanged. The audio recordings are stored only temporarily, processed, returned to HCI, and deleted immediately afterward. We have made clear agreements about this to guarantee maximum data security.

How can physiotherapy practices use Physio AI?

Practices can easily start working with Physio AI. We believe in convincing by trying. Simply start, experience, and then scale. The system is designed so that it doesn't require a large-scale implementation. You can get started today. We are currently at SpotOnMedics and FysioRoadmap We are working on integrating the applications. Practices are actively kept informed of developments in this area."

What do you hear back from physiotherapy practices?

More than a hundred physiotherapy practices are now using Fysio AI, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Therapists cite three consistent benefits: reduced administrative burden, a complete patient record, and the opportunity for genuine attention during patient consultations. For example, one therapist described the positive impact of Fysio AI on her dyslexia, and another practice has already completed more than a thousand consultations with Fysio AI. Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences also conducted research into its quality and impact. Want to know more about the added value AI offers within our EHR? We'd be happy to discuss it with you. in conversation.
